Convergence

Surface geodesic distances measured between this point and placed muscle footprints. A distance is neither an identity nor a link to a trigger point locus.

Location

On the ulnar border of the little finger, in the depression just distal to the metacarpophalangeal joint, at the border between the red and white flesh.

Follow the ulnar ridge of the little finger towards its tip and stop as soon as the metacarpophalangeal joint is behind you: the hollow that follows is the place. The border between the red and white flesh — where dorsal skin gives way to palmar skin — sets the height. With the hand loosely half-closed, the palmar metacarpophalangeal crease shows and its ulnar end falls on the same spot.

On the ulnar aspect of the fifth digit, distal to the metacarpophalangeal joint, at the junction between the base and the shaft of the proximal phalanx.

Bone landmarks only: the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint proximally, the base of the proximal phalanx distally; the place lies in the hollow between them. None of the location sources surveyed names a nerve or a vessel there — that is an absence of data, not an absence of structure.

What the finger seeks

A distinct hollow immediately beyond the metacarpophalangeal joint, on the ulnar ridge of the finger: the palpating finger meets the joint, then drops.

Put simply — The small hollow just past the big knuckle of the little finger, on the outer side.

What is unknown

Put simply — The mark is not a dot: it shows what is unknown. Two practitioners looking for this place will not put a finger in exactly the same spot.

The technique

Oblique in a distal direction, or oblique towards the palm; a superficial insertion in both works. Focks notes that this point is reputedly painful to needle. No depth is published: see the caution.

Intent stimuler-canal
Trajectory status prescribed trajectory

No depth is published: no critical structure is documented in the verified holdings for this place, and a depth figure is never published without the structure it is set against. Absence of data is not a statement of safety.

Functions

Channel functions

Clears Wind-Heat from taiyang, reduces swelling, opens the channel and eases pain along its course.

Put simply — A cooling point: both works credit it first with clearing heat and reducing swelling.

Sources : deadman-manual · focks-atlas — reworded, never copied

When to use it

Main channel

Ying-spring and Water point of the Small Intestine channel. Tradition uses it mainly as a distal point, for heat and swelling in the upper part of the channel — throat, cheek, ear, eye — rather than for the hand where it lies.

Put simply — It is needled at the hand to act higher up: throat, cheek, ear.

Sources : deadman-manual · focks-atlas — reworded, never copied

Sinew channel

The Small Intestine sinew channel starts on the dorsum of the little finger: this place lies on its first segment. What both works describe there is local — tension, stiffness and pain of the little finger along the pathway, of the bi type.

Put simply — The channel's sinew pathway begins here, at the little finger.

Character

Name, history and character

Qiangu, 'Front Valley'. The name pairs with that of its neighbour SI3, Houxi, 'Back Stream': two hollows on either side of the same joint, one named in front, the other behind. Its rank among the five shu points — ying-spring, the second — carries the same image of water just rising.

Combinations

Field open in the schema; no matter is recorded for this place.

What lies beneath

Anatomical landmark

Caution

Contemporary medicine

Safety: no critical structure is documented for this place in the verified holdings. Absence of data is not a statement of safety; no depth is published, for want of a critical structure to set against it. Innervation: absent from the location sources surveyed. Clinical concordance: not tested — no verification by Justin.

Documentary status safety not documented in the verified holdings

No risk referenced for this place in the verified holdings. The reservation below states what was searched for.

Notes

Author’s note

The second link of the channel, still entirely superficial. Its strength is not where the needle goes in: it is needled at the finger and awaited at the throat, the cheek, the ear. Both works agree on that offset — it is what sets it apart from its neighbour SI3, which works more on the neck and the back.
