The muscle and the place
Multifidus, mid-thoracic level
What the finger seeks
Person sitting bent forward or lying on their side, knees drawn up: pressure is applied just lateral to the spine, directed towards the vertebral body. Lying face down is to be avoided.
The muscle lies too deep for a cord to be grasped: you work down the groove and take your bearings from the level of a tender spinous process, not from a mass you could hold.
